MotoGP has announced a new split qualifying procedure for 2013, with the fastest riders from practice going into a pole shoot-out. The existing three 45-minute practice sessions will remain, but the first half hour of qualifying will now be additional practice and will not count for the grid.

When the Progressive International Motorcycle Show decided it wanted to build some buzz for its upcoming show, it knew that the "chicks on bikes" formula had already been played out. However, turning models (in this case, extraordinarily talented yogi-models) into the motorcycle hadn't ever been done before.

A brainstorming session along those lines led to a completely original photo shoot, wherein a group of artists and athlete models created some very wild images. In the video here, you'll see the full story of how the concept became a reality. Note that there are some slightly NSFW moments here - the models are naked after all, though artfully obscured with body paint.

A pair of head-turning high performance cars are catching some attention off a different kind, in the form of safety recalls. Aston Martin and Lotus have issued recalls for the V12 Vantage Coupe and Evora, respectively.

Aston Martin's affects 169 examples of the 2009-2012 V12 Vantage Coupe. It concerns the tire-pressure monitoring system, and is less a malfunction than it is a compliance issue. The TPMS does not alert the driver until the front tire is more than 25 percent below the recommended cold tire pressure. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138 states that the alarm must sound when tire pressure is "equal to or less than either the pressure 25 percent below" the recommended cold inflation pressure. To address the issue, Aston Martin will notify owners and reprogram the software, free of charge.

As for Lotus, 80 supercharged Evoras have been recalled, all built between February and September, 2011. The problem involves an engine-mounted oil feed pipe, which could rupture, causing loss of engine oil or a possible fire if the oil sprays onto a hot engine.

Lotus will notify owners and repair the problem, free of charge. NHTSA invites anyone who owns these affected vehicles to contact its safety hotline or go on its website for additional information. To find out more about these recalls, refer to the press release posted below.

Vehicle sales in China took a sizable dip for the first time in eight months, due largely to the fact that buyers in the country are turning away from Japanese brands. Automotive News China reports wholesale deliveries fell by .3 percent last month, while Toyota and Nissan saw sales figures fall to their lowest levels since 2008. Meanwhile, figures compiled by Bloomberg indicate Honda had its worst month since May of 2011.

While analysts in China expect market share to shift from Japanese brands to automakers like General Motors, Hyundai and Volkswagen, the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers expects October to be another down month.

Anti-Japanese riots recently broke out in China, with demonstrators targeting Japanese businesses and products with violence. Since then, buyers have participated in boycotting Japanese goods, including large items like cars and SUVs. Sales of Japanese vehicles fell by 41 percent to 160,000 units last month alone, slicing market share from 20.5 percent this time last year to 12.2 percent.

Michael Schumacher believes Mercedes will need to improve 'significantly' if he is to land another top result before he retires from Formula 1 at the end of the season. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is warning vehicle owners of the dangers of counterfeit airbags. During NHTSA testing, the agency discovered fake components that could fail in a spectacular manner, either by not deploying during an accident or by launching hot shrapnel into the driver's face and hands. Currently, the government agency says it is unaware of how large the counterfeit airbag problem could be.

The components are not being installed in new vehicles. Rather, the fake airbags are being used as replacement parts in vehicles that have been involved in an accident.

Even worse, the replacement parts may look identical to original equipment pieces, right down to the labeling. So, how do you know if your vehicle has a counterfeit airbag? NHTSA says any car or truck that has been in an accident and had its airbag replaced within the past three years by any shop not part of a dealership is at risk. Additionally, shops that have purchased airbags online may also have inadvertently installed the faulty hardware.

NHTSA recommends that owners who believe their car or truck may have been repaired using the fake airbags contact a call center operated by their vehicle's manufacturer and arrange to have the airbag inspected. Customers can expect to pay for the inspection themselves.
