K-1 DYNAMITE!! 2010 FULL RESULTS: Takaya defeats Fernandes, Aoki gets knocked out, Kawajiri dominates Thomson and more at NYE event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

hdnet_logo_6.jpg
The annual New Year's Eve event from K-1 in Japan featured a title change, a DREAM fighter defeating a Strikeforce fighter, Alistair Overeem delivering a 19 second knockout, Shinya Aoki getting knocked out in a ridiculous special rules fight and much more.

In the main event of the show, Hiroyuki Takaya got revenge against Bibiano Fernandes to capture the DREAM Featherweight Championship. The two met in the finals of the very first DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix, a bout Fernandes took by split decision. After a 2-1 mark in between fights, Takaya upset Fernandes with a one sided decision victory.

The co-main event pitted Strikeforce's Josh Thomson against DREAM's Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri. In another one-sided affair, Kawajiri dominated Thomson throughout their three round bout to earn the unanimous decision victory. The win solidified Kawajiri as one of the top representatives of Japanese MMA in the sport.

Jason High picked up a huge win on the card with a split decision win over longtime veteran Hyato "Mach" Sakurai. High dominated the action for much of the fight, but almost lost the bout in the final minute after being dropped by Sakurai. However, he won the bout on the judges' scorecards when he survived to the end of the round.

In other action on the card, Marius Zaromskis defeated Kazushi Sakuraba when Sakuraba's cauliflower ear exploded in disgusting fashion, prompting doctors to stop the fight. It was Zaromskis' first win in four fights after two losses and a no contest in Strikeforce in 2010.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem destroyed Todd Duffee, knocking him out in 19 seconds after stunning him with a knee to the gut. The win was Overeem's sixth straight in MMA, and he's now unbeaten in his last ten MMA fights.

In a special rules fight, DREAM Lightweight Champion took on K-1 fighter Yuichiro Nagashima. The fight was contested in two rounds, one a three minute K-1 rules round and the other a five minute DREAM rules round. Aoki made a mockery of the kick-boxing round, illegally clinching, throwing diving kicks and doing whatever he could to make it to the second round, where he'd be in his element under MMA rules. The line of thought into the fight was that if Aoki could survive to the MMA round, he'd take Nagashima down and submit him in quick fashion. However, Nagashima had other plans, and delivered a perfectly timed knee to the jaw at the outset of the round as Aoki rushed across the cage that knocked him out cold.

Former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi also picked up a big win on the card, though it wasn't in MMA. Mousasi took on dangerous heavyweight kickboxer Kyotaro in a K-1 rules bout, and pulled off the upset in a three round decision. En route to the win, Mousasi scored a knockdown in the second round.

Full results for the event are below:

Andy Ologun def. Kasuaki Furuki via unanimous decision.
Kazuyuki Miyata def. Caol Uno via unanimous decision
Hideo Tokoro def. Kazuhisa Watanabe via submission (armbar) at 2:50 of the third round
Hiroshi Izumi def. Ikuhisa Minowa via TKO at 2:50 of the third round
Sergei Kharitonov def. Tatsuya Mizuno via KO in the first round
Gegard Mousasi def. Kyotaro via decision.
Yuichiro Nagashima def. Shinya Aoki via KO in the second round
Alistair Overeem def. Todd Duffee via KO in the first round
Satoshi Ishii def. Jerome Le Banner via unanimous decision.
Marius Zaromskis def. Kazushi Sakuraba via TKO (doctor's stoppage).
Tetsuya Yamato vs. Akiyo "Wicky" Nishiura end in a draw (30-30, 30-29 Yamato, 30-30)
Jason High def. Hayato "Mach" Sakurai via split decision.
Tatsuya Kawajiri def. Josh Thomson via unanimous decision.
Hiroyuki Takaya def. Bibiano Fernandes via unanimous decision

ROUNDTABLE: What was your favorite fight in WEC history? What will you miss most about the WEC? MMATorch staff and contributors weigh-in

LogoWEC_150_142.jpg
What is your favorite fight from the WEC? What will you miss most about the WEC on Versus?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Well, if Anthony Pettis wins on Thursday night, then that will be my favorite WEC fight. If not, my favorite WEC fight was Miguel Torres vs. Yoshiro Maeda at WEC 34.

I will miss most having the ability to see featherweights and bantamweights on a regular basis. Look at the next two UFC cards. Top 10 fighters Josh Grispi (who is the #1 contender for the farcical UFC Featherweight Championship), Mike Brown (former WEC Featherweight Champion and current top five featherweight), and Rani Yahya (current top 10 Bantamweight) have all been relegated to unaired prelim fights. Three fights that we would have been able to see on Versus, we will not be able to see live anywhere.

I would rather see Grispi-Poirier and Brown-Nunes instead of Vera-Silva at UFC 125. But now that the WEC is gone, any fight that wouldn't have main evented a WEC event is now at risk of going unseen. As a result, other than the champions of the 135 and 145 lb. divisions, no one is going to know any of the fighters, which means lower buy rates when a card is headlined by a 135 or 145 lb. title fight, which means more talk of Armageddon from the alarmists (and yes I realize I am calling out alarmists while being one myself).

I do understand that had the WEC not merged with the UFC that established Japanese talent like Kid and Omigawa may not have come to the WEC because of the lower pay scale that the WEC had in place. But so far, color me highly unimpressed with this merger.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I would say that my favorite fight(s) from the WEC was the first fight between Urijah Faber and Mike Brown, as most people just assumed that Faber would run over Brown, but instead, humbled Faber as he felt defeat for the first time in the WEC cage. Another fight, not that it's a favorite, but more memorable than anything, was the second fight between Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen. Filho talking to nobody that was near him, or even near his corner, and dropping to guard at awkward moments in the fight was odd to say the least. Seeing it happen, as opposed to seeing it as highlights made it even more surreal. I'll miss that even though the WEC is owned by Zuffa, it made it seem that you were watching something different from the UFC. It was on cable, on another network, and featured fighters that were relative unknowns to the Chuck Liddell and Brock Lesnar fans of the world, but made it an intriguing niche among the sport. I, for one, am excited to see what those same fighters that helped bring the WEC up can do for the UFC when the new year begins.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I'll miss being able to see so many great fights for free, that's what I'll miss about WEC on Versus. There are so many great fights to choose from it's hard to narrow it down to just a couple. I remember Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver, Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung, Mike Brown vs. Uriah Faber, I could go on and on and on. I guess I'll just go with the Garcia vs. Sung Jung fight, but there's so many great ones to choose from.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung was my favorite fight from the WEC. If you have not seen this fight you need to. It is not only my favorite fight from the WEC, it is also my favorite fight in MMA this year. I think Jung won the fight, and when the judges awarded Garcia the victory, It was disappointing. But it took nothing away from how awesome this fight was.

I will miss that they were not the UFC. I love MMA and the UFC, but our sport needs Strikforce and all of the other little shows! A monopoly is not good for fans or the fighters. The WEC were usually better with each show. I liked Frank Mir as a broadcaster. He was knowledgeable and I liked that he called the fights as he saw them. I understand the move by the UFC and the merger, but I liked having another MMA show to watch. I also liked that the fights were usually not on Saturday nights.

SAM MATTHEW, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Favorite fight from the WEC? Every Miguel Torres, Leonard Garcia and Jose Aldo fight. But seriously if I have to pick one, it's Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung, probably just because it's fresh in recent memory

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

My favorite WEC fight on this week's card is Dominick Cruz vs. Scott Jorgensen. My favorite WEC fight ever, because of the build-up, was the grudge rematch between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner. I'll miss seeing so many of the top fighters in the world (Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz, etc.) competing on free TV.

MIKE BACIOR, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Literally almost every fight. I love everything about the promotion. I will miss it, but hope the same excitement transfers to the UFC.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I would absolutely love to pick an older fight to show off the depth of my WEC knowledge, but I?d be lying if I said that the organization has ever held a better fight than Ben Henderson vs. Donald Cerrone. Henderson vs. Cerrone was an epic clash of styles, and because of the the interim title in play, the two actually had five rounds to work. While there are many great scraps to be found in the WEC library, Henderson vs. Cerrone is simply in a class of its own.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The first bout between Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone was simply one of the most exciting fights you'll see in this sport, and tops the list for me. There was just a ton of drama throughout the bout, with Henderson surprising most by getting the upper hand early in the bout, only to escape submission attempt after attempt after attempt from Cerrone in the championship rounds to pull off the victory. Notables that are right up there are Cerrone vs. Razor Rob McCullough from 2008, Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver I, Faber vs. Mike Brown II and one of my favorites from this year, Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin.

As for what I'll miss the most, it's the consistently exciting free events on Versus. Rich Hansen has some very valid concerns about the status of a lot of these guys that have been Versus mainstays getting stuck on unaired prelims, and I'm holding out hope it's something that will be corrected as the year rolls on next year. But the fact that the WEC gave so many unheralded young fighters a chance to make a name for themselves on national TV will be missed.

Medical Beat: Could rotator-cuff surgery actually sideline Velasquez for a year?

News broke on Wednesday that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez suffered a torn rotator cuff in his October win over Brock Lesnar.

Now, upcoming surgery and a lengthy recovery could keep him out a minimum of six to eight months, according to trainer Javier Mendez.

But in his latest "Medical Beat" installment, MMAjunkie.com medical columnist and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Johnny Benjamin explains why that timetable may be an optimistic one. He also details some potentially serious issues Velasquez's repaired shoulder could face upon his return.

Trainer: UFC champ Velasquez out minimum 6-8 months with torn rotator cuff

Heavy speculation that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez would make his first title defense against Junior Dos Santos in Toronto came to naught today with news that Velasquez is on the bench with an injury.

American Kickboxing Academy trainer Javier Mendez today told MMAjunkie.com that the champ injured his right shoulder during a winning bid for Brock Lesnar's title at UFC 121.

When a second MRI this past week revealed a badly torn rotator cuff that could bench Velasquez for a minimum of four to six months - if not longer - a defense in April became unrealistic.

UFC QUOTABLES: Joseph Benavidez talks his destruction of black belts, wants to make UFC debut in March

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_682.jpg
"My last four wins have been against black belts. It's cool cause even though I've been matched up with black belts my last four fights, my last four wins, looking back basically I've demolished anyone that's not named Dominick Cruz, that doesn't like run around from me. So I just beat them and they just happened to be black belts... I'm going to ask to travel and fight on one of these international shows, just to get the experience. I'm hoping for March. March is a good month for me, it's a lucky month for me. That's when I fought Miguel Torres last year, and I believe there's also three shows in March so I?m really hoping to get on one of those."

-Bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez talks to MMAWeekly about his recent victories and wanting to make his UFC debut in March.

Penick's Analysis: Benavidez is entering the UFC in a tough spot. Having been beaten twice by current Champ Dominick Cruz, even though their title bout was a razor thin split decision, he doesn't have much further up the ladder that he can climb. He won't be getting another shot anytime soon, and if Urijah Faber can find a way to beat Cruz again - provided he's the next one to get the shot - Benavidez won't be fighting him either as they're close teammates. He's one of the best in the world at 135 lb., and yet he may be better suited for the flyweight division right now. If the UFC kick-starts that in 2011, he'll be at the top of the list for taking over that division in the UFC. But for now, he's likely going to keep taking tough fights, and likely winning, until the division gets sorted out further.

UFC NEWS: Chael Sonnen responds to Wanderlei Silva - "You killed who? I was taking it easy on you"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_150_12.png
In a video interview this week, Wanderlei Silva referenced a training session he had with Chael Sonnen at Xtreme Couture this year, where he said he "killed" him in training. It was in the context of thinking that fight would be a good option for him in 2011 when he returns from injury.

As should be expected, Sonnen didn't take too kindly to the comments, and went on a bit of a verbal rampage of his own on Twitter on Monday night.

"You killed who? I was taking it easy on you," Sonnen wrote. "[You] looked like Tammy Faye Baker. I went easy so that new face of yours wouldn't fall off."

But that was just the beginning. Sonnen's comments continued to escalate through the night in a series of tweets.

"More guys have worked on your face than it took to build the Pyramids," wrote Sonnen. "You look like Lisa Rinna w/a Leprechaun beard, you fool. You are a walking punchline. Go fight what's left of [Kazushi] Sakuraba in an alley behind a sushi place in Tokyo for 10 Yen apiece. If it wasn't for me, you would be thrashing around the jungle [with a] blowgun trying to catch breakfast."

"So a word to the UNWISE. DON'T TALK ABOUT ME. You don't have the words, I DO. You just got burried (sic). Now run along or I'll do worse tomorrow."

While the final comment seems to be a good closing point, Sonnen finished the night with one more jab at "The Axe Murderer."

"You're lucky your brother Joe's the matchmaker or you'd be sellin' barbecued monkey on the street in Manaus."

Penick's Analysis: Well, it didn't take long for Sonnen to get back to normal once his silence was broken during the CSAC hearing earlier this month. He's gone back to his xenophobic insults aimed at Brazilians with his jungle and blowgun statement, much like calling Ed Soares a pygmy and a savage prior to the Anderson Silva fight in August. I think the UFC will ultimately put this fight together as the talking is sure to heat up between both fighters in the coming months, though I'd still prefer a Silva-Chris Leben bout.

Meltzer says UFC is having difficulty with Lesnar's future

Maybe there was something to that little exchange between the Undertaker and Brock Lesnar following his fight at UFC 121. The rumors are swirling around Lesnar, the former UFC heavyweight champ and WWE star.

Some say the UFC wants Lesnar to take part as a coach on Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter." Others say Lesnar doesn't want to be involved with very much involving MMA right now. This report was written after listening to Pro Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer:

Lesnar reportedly hasn't talked with anyone from UFC or answered their phone calls since losing the UFC Heavyweight Title to Cain Velasquez last month. Sources also say that Lesnar hasn't began to prepare for his next UFC fight and hasn't trained since losing to Velasquez.

It's said that Lesnar has lost some interest in MMA and has been been re-considering his future in the sport after his loss to Velasquez and the beating he took in the win against Shane Carwin before that.

Lesnar reportedly has only one fight left on his contract. Could it be that the Wrestlemania appearance, which he could make upwards of $2 million for, is the hold up? Is Lesnar really thinking about bailing on MMA after just one bad loss?

UFC NEWS: UFC makes network debut as Ion Television to air three UFC 125 preliminary card bouts live on New Year's Day

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_125_poster_180_1.jpeg
The UFC will air preliminary card fights for Saturday's UFC 125 event after all.

The organization on Tuesday announced a new television deal with Ion Television that will bring three of the preliminary card fights from Saturday's card in Las Vegas to the network.

"I am excited for our fans because I've been looking for ways to broadcast UFC prelims free and to as many homes as possible," UFC president Dana White stated in today's release. "Ion is the largest broadcast television station group in the U.S., and this deal will put the UFC prelims in almost 100 million homes."

The three bouts that will air during the hour long broadcast are Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens, Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier and Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares, and the broadcast begins at 8:55 PM ET.

The Baroni-Tavares bout is the beneficiary of an online campaign by fans to get that bout on television, and in an interview with MMAJunkie.com, White said he's rolling the dice with three fights as they can't possibly fit all three in the hour if they all go to decision.

"The prelims we do air, there's only supposed to be two," White said. "Time-wise, it's impossible to pull off three if they all go to the distance. I'm going to roll the dice on this thing. Not only are we going to bring the prelims to the fans, but everybody has been hammering me for the Phil Baroni-Brad Tavares fight, so I'm going to do three fights. I'm going to give them that fight, too."

This move technically counts as the UFC's debut on network television. It's not CBS, NBC, ABC or FOX, but Ion Television is still a network station. It was founded in 1998 as PAX TV, and rebranded as Ion Television in 2007.

Penick's Analysis: This is great, great news. It's a curious move to go ahead with a lesser known station like Ion, and they're looking into whether they will make this a regular, long term thing with the network, but for this event it's great that fans will be able to see the fights. In the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Ion is available right next to the major network stations, so for fans flipping through on Saturday or looking through their guide they'd see that a UFC was on. But what type of viewership and this brings remains to be seen. It's a risky move overall, but an exciting and welcome one at the same time. They're definitely going to be banking on a quick finish in the Grispi-Poirier fight, as I can see both of the other two bouts making it to the scorecards. Still, this means three free fights at the least for fans, and a better chance for more fights to be seen on Saturday altogether.
