Official: Volkswagen drops top on production Golf GTI Cabriolet ahead of Geneva debut

Who says you can't have the best of both worlds? Certainly not Volkswagen, which has just dropped the top on its new Golf GTI Cabriolet in advance of its debut at the rapidly approaching Geneva Motor Show.

Previewed in concept form (alongside an even sportier Golf R Cabrio concept) at the Wörthersee gathering last June, the Golf GTI Cabriolet - as you might have guessed - combines the best attributes of the Golf GTI and Golf Cabriolet. (Which, when you think about it, is not unlike the approach taken by big brother Bugatti with its Veyron Vitesse, only much smaller and just slightly more affordable.) It includes the GTI's 2.0-liter turbo four and six-speed gearbox (manual or DSG), electronic limited-slip differential, 17-inch alloys and all the visual cues that go with 'em, but with the power folding fabric roof from the cabrio.

Since the current Golf Cabriolet isn't available on this side of the Atlantic, we wouldn't go holding our breath on the GTI version's availability here, either, but you can check it out in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump while we gear up to go check it out in Geneva.

Ferrari and Red Bull Racing have been forced to abandon plans to run a revised testing programme at Barcelona this week following the intervention of the FIA. Daytona 500 postponed to Monday

The Daytona 500 has been postponed for the first time in its 54-year history, with the race now set to take place on Monday after being rained off on Sunday. The paradigm has shifted. Normally an automaker's range-topper gets the latest and greatest technology, but with the introduction of the all-new A-Class, Mercedes-Benz is flipping that order on its head.

At next month's Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes will show off the next A-Class and with it, its updated COMAND infotainment system. The user interface has undergone a complete overhaul, ditching the black and beige color scheme for a sharp, modern, three-dimensional design and a range of new features and functions, nearly all of which are centered on the iPhone 4S.

The new Digital DriveStyle app allows drivers to stream AUPEO! radio (Europe's equivalent to Pandora), connect with Facebook and Twitter to read out status updates, find your car in a crowded parking lot and get real-time traffic data and point-of-interest searches through a new Garmin navigation system. All of which is available with the entry-level "Audio 20" setup.

More intriguingly, Mercedes is the first automaker to support and integrate Apple's Siri voice-recognition technology, allowing users to make appointments, send text messages and emails, get weather status and access all their songs through voice commands.

While all these features will be limited to the Euro-only A-Class at first, Mercedes says that the iPhone-integrated COMAND Online suite of services will be coming to the B-, C- and E-Class models this fall. Hit the jump for the full details.

Report: UAW training 100,000 for protests on behalf of the 99%?

According to The Daily Caller, a politically conservative news site (via The Detroit News), the United Auto Workers union is helping to organize a group called The 99% Spring, which describes itself as an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The 99% Spring is a coalition of 43 organizations, but The Daily Caller says the UAW is the "powerhouse" behind the effort that seeks to train 100,000 Americans "for non-violent direct action." While UAW president Bob King has voiced support for the movement, an unknown source told The Detroit News that the UAW is merely a part of the coalition and is not its "mastermind."

Josh Bolotsky, a so-called online organizer listed as a contact for The 99% Spring, told The Daily Caller that "an independent tech issue led to some docs, both public and private, appearing briefly on [the UAW's public-facing web site]," adding that activists at the Movement Strategy Center and the New Organizing Institute were "[t]he chief co-coordinators of the overall project."

Brawn: Red Bull still the team to beat

Red Bull will still be the team to beat in 2012 - that is the view of Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, whose team publicly unveiled its new W03 challenger to the world at the beginning of the first day's testing at Barcelona. Report: Ford's tiny 1.0-liter EcoBoost to net 177 hp?

Ford will begin rolling out its 1.0-liter, three-cylinder Ecoboost engine this year in overseas models like the UK-spec Ford Focus and C-Max. Replacing the naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder, the little Ecoboost lump translates its minimal displacement into versions with 99 horses and 118 horses, and up to 125 pound-feet of torque. A report in Autocar suggests Ford can do even better, speculating that The Blue Oval is currently testing a unit outputting 177 hp.

The supplemental power would come from another turbocharger in a production guise, but for testing purposes comes from a supercharger feeding a turbo taken from Ford's 1.6-liter, four-cylinder Ecoboost. A hi-po option would be slated some kind of "performance version of the Focus positioned some distance below the forthcoming 247bhp Focus ST."

Or, if Ford could really get that output to work for production the engine could be an option for the Fiesta ST. Shown off last year, the hotted-up Fiesta was paired with a 180-hp, 177-lb-ft version of the 1.6-liter Ecoboost. Granted, this is all hypothetical, but even with the loss of a noticeable chunk of torque the idea might have its merits.

Report: Chrysler's Clint Eastwood ad named top Super Bowl car commercial [w/video]

It's been seen by millions of viewers on television and the internet, it's been run through the political wringer on both sides of the aisle and it's been parodied by the comedians at Saturday Night Live. And, according to YouTube, Chrysler's "It's Halftime in America" ad staring Clint Eastwood has been named the top Super Bowl car commercial of 2012.

For those keeping track of such things, Chrysler's commercial has over 10.5 million views on YouTube, though we do feel the need to remind everyone that the video was unavailable for a few hours the morning after the Big Game, which we'd imagine is one of the highest traffic times for such advertisements.

The only other commercial from an automotive company that made YouTube's top five Super Bowl commercials was "2012" from General Motors - itself controversial due to Ford's attempted cease-and-desist request before it aired on the worldwide stage.

The number one ad, you ask? That would be M&M's "Just My Shell" commercial. Guess there really is no accounting for taste... we prefer our M&Ms to be green, just like everyone else. Feel free to watch Chrysler's winning ad one more time after the break.

Official: Mini reveals Clubvan Concept ahead of Geneva debut

It's a Mini. It's a van. But it's not a minivan. That's because the sort of van we're talking about here is a panel van - think of the Ford Transit Connect or recently departed Chevrolet HHR Panel - a vehicle with two seats up front, a partitian behind the cockpit and nothing but a flat load floor in back. These little workaday runabouts are immensely popular in Europe, and Mini has decided to get in on the action with its latest concept, the Clubvan, which will officially debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Seeing this concept confirms earlier rumors about a potential Clubman-based panel van, and aside from the removal of the rear seats and the addition of a stainless steel honeycomb partitian, there isn't much else to separate the Clubvan concept from its passenger-friendly Clubman kin. That makes us think this concept could rather easily make it to production.

But unlike more work-focused vans, the side walls and load floor of the Clubvan are lined with anthracite-colored cloth rather than a durable plastic compound. Then again, Mini is touting the Clubvan as the perfect fleet vehicle for fashion designers and gallery owners rather than drywall contractors or heating and cooling repairmen. The Clubman's five-door layout (that's a driver's door, passenger door, passenger-side suicide door, and dual barn doors out back) remains intact, and Mini has added six attachment loops throughout the rear cargo area to secure goods while they're being transported.

So, why a panel van? The company states that the Clubvan "combines the driving fun for that Mini is renowned with increased load-carrying capability," and that, "The Mini experience will therefore find its way into new areas of life, the brand's distinctive character gaining new popularity among target groups not previously on the Mini radar." IndyCar will replace single-car qualifying with heat races to set the grid for its event at Iowa Speedway in June. The series announced today that three 30-lap races would be run after qualifying, with the three groups to be determined by practice times. Cars that are in the top 10 in practice will race to determine the top 10 grid places, while the other two groups will be divided between odd and even-numbered practice positions to determine starting positions 11-13-15 etc and 12-14-16 etc respectively
