MMA Top 10 Featherweights: New Year, New Faces

by Michael David Smith
An injury forced featherweight champion Jose Aldo to drop out of his scheduled fight at UFC 125, and while Aldo was on the sideline for New Year's, the featherweight division underwent some radical changes.

The New Year's cards for the UFC, Dream and Sengoku all had big featherweight fights that featured several surprise results, and now that the dust has settled, the featherweight division looks a whole lot different heading into 2011 than it did for most of 2010 -- with the exception, of course, that Aldo is still the king.

Check out our rankings of the rest of the featherweight division below.

UFC NEWS: Matt Hamill vs. Phil Davis headed to UFC 129 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_722.jpg
A big light heavyweight bout is coming to the UFC 129 event in Toronto, as multiple published reports state that Phil Davis will take a step up in competition to face Matt Hamill on the card.

Davis is one of the more exciting prospects in the division, rattling off eight straight victories to begin his career. Four of those appearances came in the UFC in 2010, and in his most recent fight, at UFC 123 in November, he submitted Tim Boetsch with a modified hammerlock dubbed the "Mr. Wonderful" after the event.

Hamill, meanwhile, continued his winning ways in October when he defeated former coach and mentor Tito Ortiz at UFC 121. The win was technically his fifth straight, though one of those was the bout against Jon Jones that ended in disqualification due to illegal blows from Jones, after Hamill had been beaten soundly for much of the fight. But with wins over Keith Jardine and Ortiz in 2010, Hamill is looking to break into the top 10 of the division.

UFC 129 airs live on pay-per-view from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, headlined by a Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very good light heavyweight fight, and a chance for Davis to make a big leap in the division himself. With Jon Jones getting a shot to break into the title picture in his bout with Ryan Bader, Davis has a chance to work his way up into the mix in a big way if he can get past Hamill. This is also a chance for Hamill to prove he belongs in the top end of the division himself, and this should be a very good, very important fight for both in the division.

WWE & TNA Schedule Head-To-Head Pay-Per-View Event

Within TNA’s announcement that they are changing their PPV schedule, they noted that they are moving Victory Road from July to March and Destination X from March to July.
With Destination X, they have specifically named the date July 17, 2011. This is the same day that WWE has Money in the Bank scheduled for.
One of the companies will definitely change the date of their PPV. Anyone wanna’ bet it’s going to be TNA?

HYDEN BLOG: Alistair Overeem, Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida, and UFC 125 Aftermath

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

Staff08Hyden_Main_31.jpg
Alistair Overeem crushed Todd Duffee in 14 seconds last weekend in Japan. I really like Overeem, but he hasn't fought the competition needed to call him one of the great heavyweights in the world. At least not with conviction. I have Overeem at number six in my Top Ten, but sometimes I wonder if that's too high. Destroying Duffee makes for a great highlight, but it's like the Baltimore Ravens beating up on a rookie quarterback. It's not the same as beating Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. Duffee has the potential to be a Top Ten heavyweight, but he's not there yet. If Overeem wants to be considered one of the greats, he needs to fight other greats. Until that time, I have to keep him out of my top five. But with Strikeforce's heavyweight tournament, that time may be coming.

*************

Assuming that the reports of Randy Couture agreeing to fight Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 in Toronto are correct, this is a very interesting match. Machida employs a very cerebral approach to his fights, but so does Couture. This would be like a fighting chess match. Both guys are going to try to outwit their opponent. I don't want to keep underestimating Couture, but I think Machida would have the edge here; not so much in the mental aspect of the fight, but the physical. We all keep saying this, but time and age have to catch up to Randy eventually. How many more times can Randy turn back the clock to compete at such a high level? By no means would I call a Couture win a monster upset, however. He's proven over and over that experience and guile will trump most anything. I hope this report is true, this is a fight I'd love to see.

*************

Clay Guida finishing Takanori Gomi like he did was pretty damn cool. Guida was one of those gamer-types for a while - he could hang in there with good opponents but he couldn't beat them. Gatekeeper is another term for those fighters. However, Guida has turned that around and has finished his last three fights. Gomi, however, appears to just be a shell of his former self. Gomi has a lot of mileage on his body, and it looks like it's caught up to him, and he now appears to be in that gatekeeper or gamer role. He was a great fighter once, but it looks like those days are over.

*************

UFC 125 Quick Thoughts

-Brian Stann looked very impressive finishing Chris Leben like he did. He dominated Leben like no one has since Anderson Silva. It takes a lot of power to stop Leben, and Stann was up to it.

-Nate Diaz looked at a loss at times as he fought Dong Hyun Kim. He struggled to fend off the larger Kim throughout the fight, and perhaps a move back to lightweight would be best for Diaz at this point?

-Thiago Silva looked pretty good at times, but he really, really should have finished Brandon Vera. The fact that he couldn't says more about him than it does about Vera.

-Brandon Vera is one of the most disappointing and perplexing fighters in UFC history. He has talent that he's shown in his fights. It just seems at times like Vera doesn't even want to fight. I wonder if his heart's even in it. In this sport, your heart has to be totally into it. You have to give a part of yourself in every fight, and the training before the fight. I don't know if Vera has that desire or commitment.

-What happened to Josh Grispi? He got totally dominated by Dustin Poirier. It makes me wonder what would have happened if Grispi had fought Jose Aldo like was originally intended? Would it have been an even more vicious beating?

UFC NEWS: 28 welterweights to compete on The Ultimate Fighter season 13, coaches to be announced this week

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_TUF_150_40.jpg
The UFC tried out both middleweights and welterweights for the upcoming 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter, but according to a report from MMAJunkie.com, only the welterweights will be represented when the show begins filming later this month.

Per the report, the UFC will once again go with the 28 fighter format that they've used in the last two seasons. The 28 fighters all compete in an opening round fight to get into the house, then fight to make it to the quarterfinal round. Two of the losing fighters from that round get a chance to fight in the "wild card" fight, and they take the eighth and final spot in the quarterfinals.

The coaches for this season are expected to be announced later in the week, and the show will be taped in Las Vegas.

This will be the first season featuring welterweights since season nine, which was the U.S. vs. U.K. season coached by Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping, and will be the fifth season of the show to feature the division.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Alistair Overeem requested rematch with Fabricio Werdum

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_55.png
Strikeforce's heavyweight tournament features a very top heavy left side of the bracket, with the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Bigfoot Silva winner set to meet the winner of a Championship bout between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum, but it looks like it may have taken a little prodding from the Champ to get that fight together in the first place.

"Alistair asked for Fabricio, personally,? Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said in an interview with Sherdog.com. "When I was in Japan last week, he said, 'You've got to let me fight Fabricio. I want to avenge that loss. It's important.' So that was an easy fight to put together. Werdum says he's going to make Alistair go to sleep."

It's already been reported that all bouts during the tournament featuring the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion will be contested as five round title fights, but Coker revealed that it is not set in stone and they're looking to get all of the bouts set as five round fights.

"We're trying to talk to all the commissions in all the states that we are attempting to go to work it out," Coker said. "But I think we'll have it ironed out in 24 hours. The goal is to have the title on the line and let them fight it out because that's our world champion and Fabricio beat Fedor. I think that'd be a great representation of the Strikeforce belt."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I sincerely hope Overeem's title will be on the line when he fights, because if it's not then it will damage what they're doing with the matchmaking in this tournament. These fights are set in the logical order they should be taking place, but the title has to be on the line for that logical progression to play out. As for this being an "easy fight to put together," it really should have been on their minds the moment Werdum defeated Fedor. It should have been the fight that was coming together from the outset, and though it's great that they're getting it together, it shouldn't have taken prodding from Overeem to make it happen.

UFC NEWS: Chael Sonnen caught in a lie again as Keith Kizer rebuts statements made on MMA Live

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chael_Sonnen_180_5.jpg
Chael Sonnen getting himself caught in a lie is nothing new these days. Starting with denying the Lance Armstrong comments he made last summer in an interview with ESPN's Jim Rome, despite Rome having the audio of him making those comments, Sonnen has continued to prove himself to be a habitual liar.

One of the bigger lies he's attempted to perpetuate since his hearing with the California State Athletic Commission is that he had gotten approval for Testosterone Replacement Therapy from Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer. Kizer immediately stated to multiple outlets that not only was that not true, but that he had never had a conversation with Sonnen about anything.

Despite this, Sonnen again tried to deflect the issue with the NSAC on last week's episode of ESPN2's MMA Live. Sonnen stated that Kizer was simply abiding by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in not revealing anything about Sonnen's protected medical information. However, Kizer has rebutted Sonnen yet again, in an email response to David Bixenspan at CagesideSeats.com.

"HIPPA [sic] does not apply to the NSAC as we are not a medical provider," wrote Kizer. "I have never spoken with Mr. Sonnen on any matter. He has informed me that he wants to fly to Las Vegas and explain to me why he thought he had the OK to use TRT in Nevada. Senior Deputy Attorney General David Newton and I are awaiting him proposing a date for such a meeting."

With that said, this is not likely to be cleared up until after Sonnen returns with his contract being "frozen" this week by the UFC. Still, there are still hurdles Sonnen will need to overcome in regards to his testosterone use before he's seen in the Octagon again.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Sonnen's a pathological liar. It's just clear that the man has an issue with the truth, and it seems he'll build lies upon lies at this point, and it's now continuing to bite him in a big way. This road is far from over for Sonnen, and if he's going to fight again, while continuing to need testosterone treatment, he'll need to go through all channels to get it cleared. But that still may not help him when he's consistently spewed mis-truths about one of the heads of a state athletic commission.

Ovince St Preux Overwhelms Abongo Humphrey

by Michael David SmithOvince St. Preux went 6-0 in 2010, and now he's started 2011 in style.

St. Preux, a former University of Tennessee football player who became a professional MMA fighter in 2008, dominated Abongo Humphrey in an exciting if not particularly technical fight on Friday night's Strikeforce card. St. Preux won by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' cards, making it the third time in the last seven weeks that St. Preux has won a unanimous decision.

UFC NEWS: Charlie Valencia vs. Ivan Menjivar headed to UFC 129 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_718.jpg
A bantamweight bout between Ivan Menjivar and Charlie Valencia is on tap for the UFC 129 card in Toronto, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Both fighters look to rebound from losses in their most recent fights. Menjivar, who fought one time in the UFC nearly seven years ago when he lost a decision to Matt Serra at UFC 48, was brought into the WEC for the final event in that organization's history. However, he lost a decision to Brad "One Punch" Pickett in an exciting fight on the preliminary card.

Valencia had a three fight win streak snapped in September, as he lost by submission to former Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres. He compiled a 5-4 record in nine appearances in the WEC, and this will be his UFC debut.

UFC 129 will be the UFC's first event in the city of Toronto, headlined by a Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a solid preliminary card fight for this card. Menjivar likely needs a win to keep his roster spot, as he's just 1-3 over his last four fights, but Valencia likely will get more leeway should he suffer a loss. Still, for a preliminary card fight, this should be an exciting scrap in the 135 lb. division.

UFC NEWS: Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos to coach season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter, will fight later in 2011

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_TUF_150_41.jpg
The UFC will have a massive season of The Ultimate Fighter for their 13th iteration of the reality series, as UFC President Dana White announced that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will coach 28 welterweights during the upcoming season of the show.

Filming for the season begins later this month, with the show beginning on March 30 on Spike TV. The two will then meet in the Octagon later this year.

The notoriously reclusive Lesnar will step in front of the cameras for a month of filming for the show, and will take his first fight since losing his title to Cain Velasquez in October.

Dos Santos was supposed to face Velasquez, but with the Champion out with injury, Dos Santos will take this fight in the interim, along with the exposure that The Ultimate Fighter will bring.

Penick's Analysis: This is huge for the UFC, for Spike TV and for The Ultimate Fighter as a show. This fight is infinitely more interesting than Lesnar-Mir III, and with 12 weeks of build up to it and 12 weeks of the UFC's biggest pay-per-view on Spike TV, the fight between Lesnar and Dos Santos will be a massive pay-per-view event. We'll have more on this as it comes out, including when the two will fight, but for now this announcement is massive.

Cain Velasquez Talks Injury, Won't Be Offended By Interim Champ

UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez had been set to defend the title in April but an injury to his shoulder has forced him to sit out until at least the Fall of 2011.<br><br>

In the meantime the UFC may or may not introduce an interim Heavyweight Championship and if they were to do that, it's something the current champ wouldn't have a problem with:<br><br>

"We tried to rehab it first for six weeks. Then, finally, when the six weeks was up, we did another MRI. The muscle was still torn, so they said we have to do the surgery. I definitely want to be as active as I can. It?s hard, but it?s part of the territory. People get hurt all the time. [The UFC needs] to keep the fights going. They can?t wait around half a year for fights. It doesn?t offend me at all. When I?m ready, I?ll come back and fight."<Br><Br>

Rematch Report: Garcia vs. Phan II Booked for UFN 24 and Maynard vs. Edgar III Penciled in for UFC 130

(The losers get a bonus check from the judges' bookie.)

The UFC will attempt to get some resolution between some of its disgruntled employees in the coming months by setting up two rematches between a quartet of fighters involved in controversial decisions in their last bouts.

According to MMAWeekly, Nam Phan will look to avenge his BS loss to Leonard Garcia at the TUF 12 finale when he locks horns with the Team Jackson fighter at UFC Fight Night 24 in Seattle on March 26 and lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar will attempt to successfully defend his title against Gray Maynard for the first time after their New Year's Day UFC 125 title fight ended in a somewhat controversial majority draw when the pair get a do-over  at UFC 130 in Las Vegas.

Catching up with Bellator?s latest moves: Riggs and welterweights

As we near the start of Bellator's fourth season in March, the promotion has had a busy start to 2011, making several announcements about the new season.

-- Season four will feature a welterweight tournament, with the winner earning $100,000 and a shot at Ben Askren and his championship belt. Askren has been busy coaching the Arizona State wrestling team and winning a wrestling "super match" with freestyle world silver medalist Jake Herbert.

-- Dan Hornbuckle will return to Bellator and fight in the welterweight tournament. He will be joined by Olympic judo player Rick Hawn and Brent Weedman, who has fought on three Bellator cards.

-- They also announced the signing of Strikeforce and UFC veteran Joe Riggs. The last time the middleweight fought was with King of the Cage in Canada. Before that, he beat Louis Taylor at Strikeforce: Challengers and lost to Jay Hieron, another Bellator signee.

Strikeforce's brilliant move: Overeem and his belt in heavyweight tourney

Scott Coker and company keep hitting home runs with his Strikeforce heavyweight tournament, yet there are some fans who are still complaining. Why?

Earlier in the day, Showtime's play-by-play voice @mauroranallo snapped off on some Twitter followers for the incessant bitching about the format and the participants. I don't blame him. Showtime and Strikeforce nailed this one and the fury over the bracket or Alistair Overeem's inclusion is mind-boggling.

One of my followers on Twitter @mmafan84 sent out this tweet:

Really? These fights were going to happen "anyway?" Strikeforce just went through a horrendous year of heavyweight matchmaking. This tournament seems like the only way to guarantee the fights that fans want to see will actually take place. Fighters are free to pull out, but that's on them now.

As far as the bracket complaints, who cares? Most fans have been clamoring for Fedor Emelianenko vs. Alistair Overeem and ripping Strikeforce for not getting the fight done. With Fedor and "The Reem" on the same of the bracket, and one less fight to get through, the risk of missing out on the fight is reduced. You cry for the integrity of the tournament, I'll enjoy Overeem-Fedor in the semis.

Update - It was reported earlier in the day that all Overeem fights would be five rounds.

Showtime/Strikeforce also nailed it by not adhering to the stupid precedent that a tourney should be waged to decide who gets to face the champ.

Overeem, the Strikeforce title holder, has to be in the field. Showtime employed the same strategy with its Super Six boxing tournament featuring the elite 168 pounders in the world. Carl Froch entered the tournament with the WBC strap, lost it and then got it back. If he's good enough to take out both Glen Johnson and probably Andre Ward, then he'll emerge with the title later in 2011. The same goes for Overeem.

Frankly, any MMA media person or fan, who thinks it's smart to keep Overeem on the sidelines is insane. The guy fought MMA one time between New Year's Eve 2009 and New Year's Eve 2010. This tournament guarantees that Overeem gets fights in the U.S. In the end, that's great for MMA.

The only person who doesn't think so, is MMA television analyst Chael Sonnen. Sonnen crapped all over Overeem during a recent appearance. He's entitled to his opinion. That's what television is all about.

MMA Live is developing some of the best MMA analysts on TV, but ESPN needs to nail one or two polarizing, opinionated figures to match what the major sports already have on the network. Maybe Sonnen is that guy.

MMA Top 10 Lightweights: 2011 Starts With a Bang

by Michael David SmithThe UFC might not have a better main event all year than it had in its first main event of the year, as Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought for 25 furious minutes and showed why they're the two best lightweights in the world.

Is it disappointing that Edgar-Maynard ended up a draw? In a sense, it's always disappointing, in any competition, not to see a definitive winner. But this time the draw was the right decision (I scored it 47-47) Fortunately, the UFC made the right decision and said after the fight that Edgar and Maynard will get it on one more time to determine who's No. 1.

At the moment, Edgar and Maynard are 1-2 on my list and just about everyone else's. Take a look at how the rest of the lightweight rankings stack up below.

BELLATOR NEWS: Undefeated Judo Olympian Rick Hawn Confirmed for Bellator Season 4 Welterweight Tournament

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_201.jpg
Bellator has confirmed the second participant for their season four welterweight tournament, as undefeated Judo Olympian Rick Hawn joins Dan Hornbuckle in the eight man field.

The 9-0 judoka made one appearance for Bellator during season three, and made quite an impression with a slick no-gi shoulder throw, a judo move not often seen pulled off in the cage, followed by punches to LeVon Maynard to finish the fight in the first round. His other notable victory in MMA came last July, when he defeated former UFC veteran Shonie Carter.

"Rick was incredibly impressive in his first fight with Bellator, and is a perfect fit for our Welterweight Tournament," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney in today's release. "This tournament is shaping up to be one of our most competitive and talent-rich yet and I can't wait to see who will be facing Ben Askren for our World Championship after all is said and done."

For Hawn, who has competed in Judo for much of his life at a national and world class level, including a ninth place finish for Team USA at the 2004 Olympic Games, the tournament format will be nothing new, and it's something he's looking forward to.

"I'm definitely used to the tournament format due to my background in Judo," said Hawn. "I've been competing in Judo competitions for many years with a very similar structure, so I'm definitely used to it, and I'm looking forward to doing it again."

Should Hawn get past the field, he'd earn a shot at Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren, an Olympic competitor himself. Hawn looks forward to the potentially historic bout between former Olympians.

"I'm looking forward to possibly getting the chance to fight Ben [Askren] for the championship," Hawn said. "He's an Olympian, an incredible athlete, and the next time we see him I'm sure he's going to have improved tremendously. I think a fight between us would be a great clash of styles and I don't think two true Olympians have ever fought in the history of MMA."

Penick's Analysis: Hawn's Bellator debut was extremely exciting, and his record is impressive. But this tournament will likely represent a big step up in competition and experienced competitors overall, so this will be a huge test for him. At 34, he's not one of the young guns in the tournament, but he's got a world class skill level in one discipline and has acclimated himself well to the cage thus far. He could do some damage in this field, and he'll likely be a lot of fun to watch.

UFC NEWS: Randy Couture agrees to bout with Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

CoutureRandy_210_45.jpg
Randy Couture may not be done yet. According to a report from Ariel Helwani, Couture has verbally agreed to a bout with Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 in Toronto on April 30.

The fight has not been finalized, and negotiations are still on-going, but if the fight is set it could serve as the night's co-main event.

Couture had made some comments on Twitter and Facebook last month that suggested he was ready to hang up his gloves to concentrate on acting, but the right fight at the right time was always going to see him give it another shot. He had also reportedly been interested in a fight with either Machida or Light Heavyweight Champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, but initially it wasn't expected that the UFC would make that fight.

Couture hasn't fought since defeating boxer James Toney at UFC 118 last August. The multi-time champion and UFC Hall of Famer is 3-0 in his last three fights since moving back to the light heavyweight division following consecutive losses to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Machida will look to rebound from consecutive losses of his own. After losing the Light Heavyweight Championship in a knockout loss to "Shogun," Machida dropped a split decision to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in November.

UFC 129 is set to take place from the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Penick's Analysis: This is a great fight if it gets finalized, and is one of the two fights Couture was going to come back for. Machida now has a chance to get a big win over a big name fighter in front of a massive audience. For Couture, he has a chance to prove that he can still compete in the sport at an elite level at 47. This would be a fight that could really help sell out the Rogers Center, along with what will likely be a main event between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.

UFC audio memories: Liddell and Hughes before UFC 64

Two of the biggest stars in the history of MMA sat down for a long interview in 2006. Liddell was prepping for his UFC 66 showdown with Tito Ortiz. Even back then, Liddell was wary of Tito showing up for a fight.

Hughes was coming off his UFC 63 win over B.J. Penn. He talks about Georges St. Pierre disrespecting him coming into the Octagon after that win. Hughes would go on to loss his belt against GSP at UFC 65.

This was a great interview because Liddell forgot he was on live radio and cursed 15-plus times.

Tyron Woodley: Nobody Wants to See Me Laying on Tarec Saffiedine

Filed under:

It's hard for Tyron Woodley to stay patient. He's tried, and is still trying, but waiting his turn isn't the most natural of inclinations for the former Mizzou wrestler. That'll happen when you grow up with 12 siblings. Either you learn to seize your moment, or you get ignored.

But as the undefeated Woodley zeroes in on tonight's main event bout against Tarec Saffiedine at a Strikeforce: Challengers event in Nashville, Tenn., he has to remind himself that everything will come in due time - as long as he keeps winning.

"The fighter and the competitor in you comes out at a certain point," Woodley said of his rise through the Strikeforce ranks. "It's less about not rushing, and more about not comparing yourself to others. If you start looking at what other guys are doing, then you might get frustrated. So what I started doing is, I think that what God has in mind for my future and my plan is for me. Nobody else is going to have my route and what I'm supposed to do in mixed martial arts."

Fight Booking Smorgasbord: Davis vs. Hamill, Rampage vs. Thiago Silva Reportedly On Tap

("I'll take Gilbert Godfried for the win, Joe." PicProps: UFC.com)

Those of you who were paying attention to Phil Davis’ Twitter account this week (and really, why wouldn’t you be?) already knew that the light heavyweight up-and-comer recently inked a bout agreement he was just dying to tell us all about. Now, it seems he won’t have to. Those damned internet websites are at it again, citing “sources close to the event” saying that Davis will take on Matt Hamill at the already stacked UFC 129 in Toronto. And why not? Hamill’s the dude the UFC traditionally likes to run up against its 205-pound prospects (and sometimes, its 205-pound graybeards) to see what they’ve really got in the tank. Makes sense to us.

Also on the horizon, it’s reported that fresh off showing his lack of social skills against Brandon Vera at UFC 125, Thiago Silva will step in the cage against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 130. Both guys are coming off wins and it’s conceivable that the winner of that bout could be added to an ever-growing list of title contenders at 205-pounds.  But wait, that’s not all. After the jump some other alleged upcoming dates in the Octagon.
