Confirmed: McLaren MP4-12C 'Project Alpha' cars being built for Windy City rich

It has become clear that the McLaren MP4-12C is car that can match Ferrari and Aston Martin in terms of outright performance, and with vehicles like the X-1 Concept, we're starting to believe that the company can hang with the big boys in terms of special editions, too.
Case in point is this six-example "Project Alpha" model that's headed to McLaren's Chicago dealer. The Project Alpha supercar - revealed to Autoblog via a sales brochure in PDF form - represents a stylish amalgam of bits and pieces from the company's Special Operations catalog.
A representative of Chicago McLaren was able to confirm that the 2012 model-year special edition is fully loaded in terms of the current options sheet, while also offering all of the functional upgrades due out on the 2013 model: 616 horsepower, revised shift and throttle logic, and a retuned exhaust."These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand..."
The Project Alpha Mac features a host of cosmetic upgrades, too, which set it apart from the, uh, pack. A gloss black finish can be found on the roof, front splitter, rear deck lid and inner surfacing of the wheels, while carbon fiber rear vents and front fender louvers complete the exterior modifications. In the cabin, badging on the driver's door identifies the model, and a host of "Project Alpha" branding hammers the message home.
The expected retail price for the MP4-12C Project Alpha is around $335,000, though 4 of the 6 examples have already been spoken for.
Michele Shapiro, Public Relations Manager for McLaren North America, tells Autoblog "These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand using options from the existing McLaren Special Operations catalogue." Shapiro continues, "MSO offers a specialization service that varies from trim and bodywork changes - as witnessed by this car - to a whole new car, for example the X-1 project recently shown at The Quail in Monterey, California."

Official: Volkswagen again named tops in Total Quality survey by Strategic Vision

Global marketing and communications firm Strategic Vision has announced the results of its annual Total Quality Index. In the 2012 edition of the study, Volkswagen Group of America achieved the highest rating in Total Quality. This marks the German automaker's second year of achieving the accolade. According to the press release from Strategic Vision, the runner up spot was actually a tie between Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Company.
Strategic Vision factored in vehicles like the Audi A4 and A8, as well as notable VW vehicles like the Golf, Eos, and Tiguan in its study. The study also pointed to the quality of vehicles like the Flex, F-150, as well as the Fiat 500 for such a tight finish between Ford and Chrysler.
Toyota came out with the fewest reported problems of any brand. According to the study, only 17% of Toyota owners reported having problems.
Strategic vision says this was its closest finish in "Total Quality" that it has ever reported. According to the release, "Customers are increasingly defining 'quality' holistically and using Total Quality in their decisions." In assessing the Total Quality Awards, Strategic Vision calculated the results from surveys sent out to 45,390 individuals who purchased new 2012 model year vehicles from September to December of 2011. Edwards denies Penske rumours
Carl Edwards has denied that he will switch from Roush Fenway Racing to Penske Racing for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup. The 33-year-old American is in the first year of his current deal with Roush, which was signed following lengthy negotiations last year. Report: Health Canada clamps down on Targa Newfoundland over collectable Marlboro suit

We're sure you remember Zahir Rana, the gentleman who piloted a Ferrari Enzo into the Atlantic Ocean during last year's Targa Newfoundland. When the gentleman took his co-pilot and his car for a swim, he happened to be wearing a racing suit once worn by Rubens Barrichello. Back when the Formula One racer drove for Ferrari, the team was sponsored by Marlboro, which meant the cigarette company's logo was plastered all over the the suit. As it turns out, Health Canada takes a dim view of tobacco advertising during any racing event, and despite the fact that Rana had bought the signed suit at a charity auction as a piece of racing history, the government agency took offense to photos from the race depicting Rana in full Marlboro regalia.
According to Wheels.ca, Targa President Bob Giannou found himself on the raw end of phone calls and letters from Health Canada, informing him of "prohibitions regarding the promotion of tobacco products," even if the reference is historical.
Does that mean Canadian officials are going to block the public appearance of the hordes of vintage race cars sponsored by the likes of Rothmans, Marlboro, John Player Special, Camel, Lucky Strike, Kool and Skoal just to name a few? Like it or not, tobacco and racing have a long and storied history together, and attempting to censor that history from the public eye is downright foolish. Good luck, Health Canada.

Pedrosa had faith he would win
Dani Pedrosa said he still thought he could win the Czech Grand Prix even when Jorge Lorenzo overtook him half a lap from the finish. In an epic showdown at the end of the Brno race, Lorenzo slipped inside long-time Pedrosa on the final lap, only for the Honda to retaliate going into the last few corners and edge back ahead. Lorenzo then braked ultra-late into the final S-bend only to run wide and let Pedrosa accelerate through and claim victory.

Alonso hoping for wet Belgian GP
Fernando Alonso believes a wet Belgian Grand Prix would better suit his and Ferrari's championship hopes. Although Alonso holds a 40-point advantage in the Formula 1 title standings, he reckons the fact that Ferrari has not had the quickest car all season means that a downpour at Spa-Francorchamps could offer him more opportunity for a big points haul. Video: Watch Red Bull take a tour of New Jersey in an F1 car

Formula One may not be descending on New Jersey next year for the Grand Prix of America, but the news hasn't stopped Red Bull from doing a little early scouting. David Coulthard dusted off the RB7 racer for a few quick sprints through the streets of New Jersey and West New York on the proposed course. As if watching the F1 bruiser dart down the waterfront and through car-lined city streets isn't enough to get us seriously stoked about the race, Red Bull also turned its team loose on the Lincoln tunnel.
Listening to the high-strung racer clear its lungs in the tunnel is nothing short of fantastic. You'll want to turn up the volume for this one. Red Bull said the stunt drew onlookers out of their homes just to see and hear the RB7 scream by their doorsteps. We can certainly understand why.
As you may recall, F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone has said that the event is definitely not going to happen in 2013 and may get pushed back to 2014.

Official: New CAFE rules officially finalized; 54.5 mpg is like making gas $1/gallon cheaper

Increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for model year 2017-2025 cars to 54.5 miles per gallon was first proposed in July 2011. Since then, there has been a lot of back and forth, a lot of positive and negative responses, and, lately, a delay for unknown reasons. Since the CAFE rules were not changed between the mid-1980s and when President Obama came into office and rules for 2012-2016 model year vehicles were put in place in 2010, it's not a huge surprise this update took so long. That's all over now.
Department of Transportation secretary Ray LaHood and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson announced the official finalization of new federal fuel efficiency standards in a Tuesday conference call. Some headline numbers from the call:
- The reduced fuel use will save American families over $1.7 trillion dollars in fuel costs.
- Vehicles on American roads will use two million barrels of oil less per day by 2025, "as much as half of the oil we import from OPEC each day."
- More efficient cars will be more expensive, but LaHood said that the buyers can expect average fuel savings of $8,000 per vehicle (over the life of the vehicle) for a 2025 model year car compared to a similar vehicle from 2010, using today's prices. That's equivalent to gas being a dollar a gallon cheaper.
- You like lower emissions? The new standards will "reduc[e] emissions by 6 billion metric tons over the life of the program - more than the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the United States in 2010."
We don't know how these incentives stack (or don't) with current incentives or if they're just the ones already in place, but we've put in a call to the EPA to find out. We'll let you know when we hear back. A sample of early responses to the official rules - all positive, so far - is available below.The program also includes targeted incentives to encourage early adoption and introduction into the marketplace of advanced technologies to dramatically improve vehicle performance, including:
Incentives for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cells vehicles;
Incentives for hybrid technologies for large pickups and for other technologies that achieve high fuel economy levels on large pickups;
Incentives for natural gas vehicles;
Credits for technologies with potential to achieve real-world greenhouse gas reductions and fuel economy improvements that are not captured by the standards test procedures.

Do not adjust your computer screen, you are not seeing the rebirth of the Pontiac brand. General Motors has chosen to use a G8 to disguise a test mule for the latest prototype of the forthcoming Chevrolet SS. The G8 was closely related to the Holden Commodore and Vauxhall VXR, the platform upon which the new Chevrolet performance model will be based. It should come as little surprise, then, that GM has opted to use the cladding from the former G8.
Thought the front clip of this mule is pure Pontiac, note the vents immediately behind the front wheel. That is a distinctive design hallmark of the Vauxhall VXR. Also note that this vehicle is right-hand drive, as the Holden and its Chevy counterpart will be very closely related. That likely includes potential drivetrains. The spy photos of this mule also reveal very wide rear tires, and rear wheels that do not match the fronts.

Report: There's a reason all crash test dummies were male until last year

Last year, government regulators made female crash test dummies a mandatory part of crash evaluations for the first time in collision evaluation history. Until then, manufacturers had been content to use dummies patterned after the average American male.
Safety advocates have argued for years that designing for male occupants present problems for smaller females. When airbags deploy, they're meant to strike occupants in the chest, but smaller individuals may instead be hit in the chin. If that happens, further head and neck injuries could ensue. According to Automotive News, smaller women are three times as likely as average-sized male drivers to be seriously injured in accidents.
Automakers have repeatedly argued that the average-sized test mannequin covers 95 percent of the driving population, and that developing a smaller dummy would take too long to create and be cost prohibitive. That argument has officially fallen by the wayside with the new requirements. Automotive News reports manufacturers are officially required to use small female crash dummies in front collision evaluations for 2011 model-year units.
