Mercedes ?didn?t offer more money?

Mercedes did not break the bank to secure Lewis Hamilton's services, claims its team principal Ross Brawn. Hamilton's move from McLaren to Mercedes came amid suggestions that the Brackley-based outfit was offering him a higher retainer than his current team - as well as greater commercial freedom to find personal sponsors. However, Brawn says that Hamilton's motivation to move teams had nothing to do with money ? and was instead about finding a new challenge in his career

Rumormill: BMW M750i and 728i may be launching next March

Fresh off its mid-cycle update, the BMW 7 Series is once again the center of rumors, this time in the context of the new swath of M-branded vehicles that BMW is set to unleash upon the world. The rumor was dropped by German blog BimmerToday, and suggests that an M750i would join the ranks of the M550d, X5 M50d, and M135i. This seems rather plausible, as BMW has long been hesitant to produce an out-and-out M7 performance saloon.

If the rumors are to be believed, the M-variant 7 Series would have a version of the turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 currently in the 750i, but tuned to 450 horsepower. Power would be sent to either the rear wheels or all corners via BMW's xDrive. The question remains, though, what would happen to the Alpina B7 if this car were to come to market? All the added power and handling seems to fall right on top of the B7's piece of the 7 Series pie. Its future would remain to be seen.

Also in the rumor-mongering was word that there could be an entry-level 728i, employing BMW's N20B20 turbocharged 2.0-liter mill, albeit with the help of an electric motor. Such a vehicle would be slotted below the current 740i and positioned to take on small-displacement hybrid flagships from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Remember to take these reports with perhaps a few grains of salt; but its interesting to consider the possibility of BMW expanding the 7 Series lineup in both directions.

Quick Spin: 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Coupe

2013 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport with 60th Anniversary packages - front three-quarter view

After ripping around in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 supercar and enjoying every tire-shredding moment, we were worried that the Corvette Grand Sport Coupe, its lesser sibling, would be a letdown. We were very wrong. Chevrolet has made sure its Corvette Grand Sport deliberately lacks the supercharger and bad-boy displacement of its big brothers, but its masterfully-tuned 6.2-liter V8 is nothing to laugh at, boasting 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque.
  • Power is more than abundant, and the soundtrack sent chills down our hardened spines (for best results, remove the silencing exhaust flapper fuse - it takes about three minutes).
  • Thanks to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (a 6AT is optional) and a limited-slip differential, this two-door will blast to 60 mph in about four seconds flat. Top speed, about 190 mph, is fast enough to lift a loaded commercial jetliner off the ground.
  • Our coupe, a 4LT model, arrived decked out in Arctic White paint with 60th Anniversary Design and 60th Anniversary Stripe packages. Some may consider the celebratory packages a bit gaudy, but it garnered more than a few compliments from passer-bys.
  • The Corvette's cabin might be getting woefully dated, but our car's diamond-blue leather upholstery helped this C6's cabin look about as good as we've ever seen it.
  • Taming a big American V8 isn't easy, but Chevrolet has done an excellent job. Upgraded with GM's Active Handling, unique body components and a higher, wider rear spoiler, our car also featured the Z52 Performance Package (bundled with a track-ready dry-sump oil system, differential cooler, sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires and larger cross-drilled brakes).
  • While the Grand Sport starts at $56,000, our as-tested price, including the must-have Magnetic Selective Ride Control (magnetorheological shocks) and some other options, was about $70,340.
  • Despite being down a couple of hundred horsepower, we found the Grand Sport Coupe slightly more enjoyable than the ZR1 on public roads - its power is simply more useable. We could more easily put our foot to the floor coming out of the corners without worrying about kissing a guardrail or an immobile tree. The steering is razor-sharp, and the brakes and suspension were easily up to everything we could throw at them.
  • For maximum pleasure, enjoy the 2013 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe sans roof panel and with all the windows down. We did, often.

Singapore GP future not guaranteed

Singapore's future place on the Formula 1 calendar remains up in the air, with circuit chiefs suggesting there is no guarantee a fresh deal will be sorted. The race organisers and Bernie Ecclestone have been locked in negotiations for several months now trying to thrash out a fresh five-year deal - but there are disagreements about the size of the race fee.

Report: Chrysler trademarks 8 Mile, ProMaster

Fiat Ducato van - red - front three-quarter view

Chrysler has been busy at the trademark office. Allpar.com reports the manufacturer has laid claim to a stack of new names, including Detroit Motor Works, Wrangler Freedom Edition, 8 Mile, Crossroad and Chrysler 100, as well as Ram ProMaster and the Ram ProMaster City. The automaker has made no secret of the fact that it wants to build a new small car, and that the machine will almost certainly ride under the Chrysler 100 banner. Dealers reportedly got a closer look at the vehicle at a recent gathering in Las Vegas.

Likewise, the two ProMaster names are little surprise, as Fiat intends to give the Ford Transit and Transit connect some competition with its own European-style Ducato vans. Now it looks as if those will come with Promaster badges.

But, names like Detroit Motor Works, 8 Mile and Crossroad all leave the door open for some speculation. Allpar.com also reports Chrysler has laid claim to Active Air, which it speculates may be applied to the company's variable valve timing systems.

Alonso: Next three races key to title

Fernando Alonso says it will be key to maximise his opportunities in the three upcoming races, as he believes Ferrari will perform strongest before the final run-in begins. The Spaniard arrives in Singapore for this weekend's race with a 37-point lead over McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who has won two of the past three grands prix. Alonso believes that of the seven circuits left on the calendar, the Marina Bay, Suzuka and Yeongam tracks will suit the Ferrari F2012 far better than those that follow

Video: Chris Harris discovers new niche with Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake

Chris Harris reviews Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

There are a number of interesting tidbits in Chris Harris' review of the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, one of them being that he spends most of his seat time talking about the station wagon like it's a sports car. This isn't all that surprising if you limit yourself to the side of the spec sheet that lists "twin-turbo V8 with 557 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, limited-slip differential and seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission."

One the other side, though, is the part about it being more than 16 feet long, having four doors, seating for five and a cargo capacity that can go from 590 liters to 1,550 liters by folding down the rear seats (that's about 21 cubic feet to 55 cubic feet). And that gets Harris examining how a wagon can not only fill a niche, but can actually be something special and, perhaps, even a cult vehicle.

Another measure of how far the automotive world has come is when Harris says, "Only a little 285-section [tire] at the back," which means a new goalpost for "little" tire sizes comes from a review of a station wagon. You can see what else Harris has to say in the video below.
